How to Share iCloud Drive Documents on iOS 11

If you are an iCloud Drive user, you may have known how to share the files stored in your iCloud account to your friends. But if you are not so familiar with the process, and you need to send a file to someone on your iPhone, read this post to learn more.

The ability to share files in iCloud was firstly introduced in iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra, which allows you to invite other iCloud users to work together on a shared document stored in your iCloud Drive. You can also set up permission for the shared files or revoke access to those files. The sharing can be done through iOS devices, Macs, or via, and any modification will be synced across platforms.

To share iCloud Drive documents on your iPhone or iPad:

  • Tap iCloud Drive app on your iOS device, and look for the file you want to share.
  • Tap the Select button in the upper right corner of the screen, and then select the file.
  • Tap the Share (arrow-up) icon on the bottom, and tap Add People in the Share sheet.

Now you can select how you would like to share this file from all available options. Take Mail as an example. You tap Mail in the Add People sheet, type or choose a contact from the email address field, and then tap Send in the upper right corner.

After that, the recipient will receive the email which contains a link to access the shared file, and he/she is able to make changes to the file in real time. So the second question comes: what if you want to change the permissions for the shared file?

To edit the permissions of shared file for one individual, firstly select the file in iCloud Drive, tap Share icon, and tap Show People option. Then you will be able to select the individual person in the People sheet, and select Can Make Changes or View Only in the Info sheet, to change permission for the specific person. If you want to stop sharing the file with this person, select Remove Access below instead.

To change the permissions for everyone you are sharing with, tap Share Options in the People sheet, and make your choices in the Who Can Access and Permission sections. If you select Anyone With The Link in the Who Can Access section, you can tap Copy Link to get the link, and quickly share the file with anyone who can access this link.

To stop sharing the file, just tap Stop Sharing in the People sheet.
